Rafa on holiday ..

Rafael Benitez has admitted he'll continue working while on holiday this summer - so long as his wife doesn't find his mobile phone!

With the Reds' season having ended at the weekend Benitez is now looking to put his squad rebuilding plans into action as he looks to bring new faces into the club. The boss has previously spoken of his desire to finalise transfer business as quickly as possible, and even though he has plans for a summer break he insists he'll still be doing all he can to ensure it's a productive close season for the Reds. "I don't tend to have too much time away from football, but I will try to switch off for a bit," he says. "I will have to try to hide my mobile phone, and if my wife can't find out about it I'll try and keep it on me. "But if she finds it I'm sure she'll throw it in the swimming pool! "I don't like the beach too much but I don't mind being around a swimming pool or maybe going up into the mountains." And even when he does find time to relax on holiday, Benitez admits it's often impossible to escape the attentions of the club's worldwide fan base. "When you are at such a big club as Liverpool everybody knows who you are and it's not easy to get away from people on holiday," he added. "Last summer, I was by the swimming pool and a kid was playing football wearing a Liverpool cap. He passed the ball and it came to me, so I tried to dribble it past him and we were playing for about five minutes. "After we'd finished, his father spoke to him and said 'do you know who that is?' The kid says 'is it a Liverpool player?' and his dad replies 'no, it's the manager!' "So after that he was with me playing football the whole week. He was the only one who hadn't recognised me and he was the one wearing the Liverpool cap."

Well done Man Utd !

Congratulations to Man Utd for being crowded the English Premier League champion for season 2007/2008.

Even though I had written them off in my previous posting, and thought that Chelsea would overtake them in the final match, it’s indeed a well deserved 10th title for Sir Alex Ferguson and his team, what an achievement ! I really have to take my hat off (:

It’s a grand finale and indeed an exciting end to an eventful season. The Devils and the Blues were involved in the title race till the very last day of the season, while the lower tier teams were engaged in the fierce relegation battles. With this kind of excitement, the EPL has captured the heart of millions of TV viewers worldwide, and become one of the most watched sports events in the world.

In the coming season, it will be a 4 horse race again. Man Utd and Chelsea are going to be the dominant force, while Arsenal and Liverpool will continue to give a strong challenge to the top two.

What’s next for the new season ?

Man Utd – It’s a strong team from attack to defense. It has a reputable manager in Sir Alex, and has strong financial backing from the club owners. The defending champion will continue to play attractive football with the influence of Ronaldo, Rooney, and Nani.

Chelsea – A team with powerful financial background. The weakest link could be its current manager. The success of this team is very much depends on whether Avram Grant can bring out the best of his stars players, week in and week out.

Arsenal – A very young team which is in the right direction for greatness. However, the Gunners need one or two established and seasoned players to fill up the gap left by Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry. A combination of young and matured players is necessary to sustain a long season, from August till May.

Liverpool – This team is still searching for its 19th league title. The Reds has evolved from a defense minded team to a more attacking outfit. It has scored 119 goals in current season, the highest in England but without winning any trophy. The boardroom quarrel should be put to rest, with a takeover by DIC would provide a perfect option. Rafa needs funds to bring in one or two attacking midfielder and a striking partner for Fernando Torres.

Nation building in Malaysia

"The crux of the problem is Malaysia's nation-building is so much about politics and politicking and not about building strong institutions and dealing with the economy," said an analyst at Singapore's Institute of South East Asian Studies.

Woman left for dead after robbery

(NEW STRAITS TIMES) - A woman was stabbed at least four times in the back and left for dead by robbers in a senseless attack yesterday morning.

Lee Hui Fun was found unconscious in Jalan Maktab, near the police college in Cheras, by policemen on patrol duty.It is believed that the 33-year-old victim, a clerk from Taman Kencana, Cheras was attacked while she was walking to work. The victim's handbag, containing her identification documents, was taken in the robbery.

Police have still not been able to interview Lee, who is said to be still in a state of shock. She was warded at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital where her condition was reported to be stable.Lee was found unconscious about 9.40am. Policemen and several passers-by gave her first aid before sending her to the hospital.

A Muslim from Myanmar

I met a Muslim guy who is from Myanmar yesterday. His name is Baser, quite good looking :). He looks like a Malay and I saw him reading The Stars, focused on the International section, on Cyclone Nargis which ripped apart villages in Myanmar. His eyes told me that he was really worry about his family in his homeland.

Baser came to Malaysia as a refugee through UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), and was issued an ID card. He came here because the military government is treating Christian and Muslim on a double standard basis. According to Baser, life is really tough back home, it’s hard to earn a living to feed his family. In order to improve the condition, he came to Malaysia as a refugee.

He works as a parking attendant from 9am-10pm, 13 hours a day, every single day, sometimes being bullied by locals. He earns an income which is just enough to feed himself and barely manage to send home some money for his wife and children. To my surprise, he spoke perfect English. In addition, he is a bachelor degree holder and half way through his master program, his field of study is Agriculture. His only hope now is to earn enough money so that he can continue his study in a Malaysian university, even though the process of accumulate the money might take many many years.

After talking to Baser for about 30 minutes, I really feel that we Malaysian are really really lucky. We can still choose where to go for our dinner, while there are people in our neighboring countries who are still struggling to get a bowl of rice for their meal.

Quotes from Jose Mourinho

1. "There is no pressure at the top. The pressure's being second or third.”

2. "For me the most important thing in my life is love. I think you have to be in love with your family, with your job, with the people who work for you. If you are not in love with your wife you have to divorce. If you are not in love with your kids you are not a human being so you have to kill yourself, if you are not in love with your job you must change your job.”

3. "I've been very keen to work with adidas as I see their leadership in football as a perfect synergy with my own aspirations and ambitions.”

4. "And I think because of the passion of every English player and every English supporter, and every English journalist for the game, most of the game is played with passion, love for football and instinct, but in football you also have to think."

5. "In five years I have never had a match where my team has had less possession than the opponents."

6. "You see how Spanish, Italians, Portuguese play football. I don't say they are perfect, I say English football has a few things to learn from them in the same way they have a lot of things to learn from English football."

7. “I am very happy because the club is beating records with the sales of new shirts. I don’t sell shirts but there a relation between shirt sales and the performance of the team. If we perform well they sell more shirts.”

8. “If Roman Abramovich helped me out in training we would be bottom of the league and if I had to work in his world of big business, we would be bankrupt!”

9. “Everybody was waiting for Chelsea not to win every game and one day, when we lose, there will be a holiday in the country. But we are ready for that.”

10. “Sometimes you see beautiful people with no brains. Sometimes you have ugly people who are intelligent, like scientists.”

11. “It is like having a blanket that is too small for the bed. You pull the blanket up to keep your chest warm and your feet stick out. I cannot buy a bigger blanket becuase the supermarket is closed. But I am content because the blanket is cashmere. It is no ordinary blanket.”

12. “Young players are a little bit like melons. Only when you open and taste the melon are you 100 per cent sure that the melon is good."

13. “It is omelettes and eggs. No eggs - no omelettes! It depends on the quality of the eggs. In the supermarket you have class one, two or class three eggs and some are more expensive than others and some give you better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, you have a problem”

14. “I felt the power of Anfield, it was magnificent”

15. “Please don’t call me arrogant, but I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one.”

16. “Would you phone the president of Ghana?” - when Jose Mourinho was asked by a Ghanaian journalist on whether he had ever phoned Roman Abramovich.

17. “The crowd is magnificent, singing “F**k off Mourinho!” and so on…”

18. "We have top players and, sorry if I'm arrogant, we have a top manager."

19. "As we say in Portugal, they [Spurs] brought the bus and they left the bus in front of the goal. I would have been frustrated if I had been a supporter who paid £50 to watch this game because Spurs came to defend. There was only one team looking to win, they only came not to concede - it's not fair for the football we played."

Chelsea will win both EPL + UCL

It's really nice to see Chelsea and Man Utd to be involved in the EPL title race and the final of UEFA Champions League showdown in Moscow.

In my opinion, Chelsea will win both of the honours based on the fact that Roman Abramovich's has all the financial muscles and key players to outplay the Devils in these two fronts. On top of that, Moscow is Roman's homeland. The way both of the Liverpool defenders (Riise and Hyypia) gifted two soft goals show it all.
